About us

Shemmings Hathaway LLP was set up by Sarah Shemmings and Henry Hathaway in 2021. Both Sarah and Henry are experienced construction lawyers who have worked together for a number of years before deciding to set up this niche practice working specifically for the construction industry.

Sarah has throughout her legal career worked in the property and construction sectors. 

 

She spent a number of years working on professional negligence claims for Consulting Engineers and which ranged from defective piling, to defective design, especially of plant rooms, to electrical systems. 

Sarah also became involved in one of the early leading environmental cases regarding water pollution and which case resulted in a successful judgment given by the House of Lords. [Cambridge Water Company v Eastern Counties Leather]. 

Sarah has had a number of reported cases, including a number relating to adjudication enforcements, including the case of Aspect Contracts (Asbestos) Ltd. v Higgins Construction plc which reached the Supreme Court.

Henry started his professional career as a Civil and Structural Engineer.

 

He spent 12 years in the construction industry working for contractors and employers, mainly in the Engineering and Project Management side. 

 

After being involved in dispute work, he took the step of training to become a solicitor. 

 

After qualification, Henry continued to work for contractors, sub-contractors, employers and other professionals dealing not only with dispute work but also, reviewing and negotiating contracts.  

 

Henry is also a fully qualified lawyer in Ireland.
